Conditions of Wear & Tear Jewelry Include:
- Gemstones that have accumulated dust and grease, dulling their natural shine.
- Gemstones exposed to chemicals or water, such as perfumes or washing liquids.
- Broken chains, clasps, metal settings, prongs, and other fasteners that may loosen with regular use.
- General wear and tear, including jewelry that has bent out of shape or tarnished (oxidized).
- Plating or oxidized finishes that have worn off. Over time, plating may fade slightly, revealing the base metal underneath.
(Plating refers to a metal coating that is bonded electronically or chemically to a base metal to achieve a different color or finish, such as gold plate.)
(Oxidizing is a chemical process often used to give metal a darker ‘antique’ or ‘vintage’ appearance. This finish may also wear or rub off over time.)
